Mainland China has 40 institutions ranked in the QS World University Rankings® 2019 , including six in the global top 100, with a further 60 top Chinese universities included in the new QS Mainland China Rankings .With the latest figures showing that nearly 490,000 international students were enrolled in Mainland Chinese universities in 2017 (10 percent more than in 2016), it seems that China has certainly met its target of hosting 500,000 foreign students in 2020. The top sending countries include South Korea, Thailand, Pakistan, the United States, India, Russia, Japan and Indonesia.
1. Tsinghua University

Looking at the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject, Tsinghua University performs best for architecture, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and materials sciences. For all three of these subjects, it is ranked among the top 15 universities worldwide.
2. Peking University
A consistent contender among the top universities in China, Peking University is a prestigious research university that belongs to China's C9 League.
Peking University admits a high number of international students each year and has maintained a partnership with Germany's Freie Universität Berlin since 1981. As well as its premier academic offering, the grounds of the Peking campus University is loved for its traditional Chinese architecture.

Beijing Of the 40 Chinese institutions featured in the QS World University Rankings 2019, nine are based in Beijing, the capital of China. The highest ranking university in Beijing is Tsinghua University (ranked 17 th in the world) which offers a choice of master's programs in English,
while Peking University is second (30 th in the world) and aims to increase the number of programs taught in English to attract more international students. The university is also accepting more students through the Confucius Institute Scholarship Program, which aims to promote the Chinese language and culture around the world.
Shanghai
Although Shanghai is considered the most expensive Chinese city to live in, it also means that it is where many of the jobs are, which can make it attractive for those hoping to find a part-time job during their studies. or full-time employment after graduation.
The three top universities in Shanghai to feature in this year's ranking are: Fudan University (ranked 44 th ); Shanghai Jiao Tong University (together 59 th ); and Tongji University (291 st ). The first two are in the C9 league of elite universities, indicating that China's ambition to create something like a US Ivy League is showing results.
Xi'an
Xi'an is one of the oldest cities in Mainland China, with enough important relics and historical sites to keep history buffs happy throughout the study. One of the most famous and impressive sites is the Terracotta Warriors, which were built to be buried with the First Emperor Qin Shihuang, so that they could serve him in the afterlife.
Xi'an universities include Xi'an Jiaotong University, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Northwest University, and Xian International Studies University, all of which are dedicated to establishing international relations with other institutions around the world.

China visa requirements
After being offered a place at a university in China, you need to go to your local Chinese embassy, and apply for a visa appropriate to your length of stay. China's visa requirements say that for a stay of six months or more, you will need a study visa (or X1 visa). If you do not receive your entry package in time, you can apply for a tourist visa (L-visa) and convert it to a student visa upon arrival.
